Restyling my dresser top with a little DIY

We had a little ice storm around here last night which resulted in my having a much more open day today than previously planned.

So I finished up a few little projects that really needed finishing.

In January I told you about my mini-makeover plans for our master bedroom, which included the dresser top:

I started the whole thing in January, but for some reason, this one small spot was giving me fits.  Nothing I tried really looked good, and I was short on inspiration.

But after digging around in my existing stash of stuff, and finishing a couple of old DIY projects, I’ve got something I can live with.

DIY Finish #1:  Topiary

DIY topiary

Once upon a time in Kansas City I started this project.  And never finished it.  Then when I was looking around for something tall for my dresser top, I found it and decided it might just work.

The topiary itself was already made — from a topiary form, hot glue gun and some dried florals things.  To finish it, I spray painted an old container I had with glossy, ivory paint (I really wish I had taken a picture of it before — it looks so much better now!).  Then I wrapped some pieces of grapevine around the topiary stem and stuck them into the foam base and ball.  Last was gluing a bit of moss around the base of the topiary.

DIY Finish #2:  Tray

While I was digging around, I also came across this half-finished project.  It started with a basic wooden tray (I think it was from Michael’s).  I had painted it at some point, but nothing more.  It seemed like a good fit for the dresser, so I finished it with some scrapbook paper I had, a piece of glass cut to fit inside, and the faux brass hinges ($2 at the hardware store where I got the glass cut, with a quick coat of aged brass spray paint).

The lamp came from our downstairs office; the little plant from a hallway table; the bird and the box are new.  One final addition will be a beautiful little piece from an art fair I’m having framed.  I can’t wait to see it propped up against the mirror.

Lots of little projects getting done around here and it’s not even the weekend yet! What are your plans?

It’s so funny, I have told you we have a few of the exact same accessories in our homes. I have not been to your bedroom and did not notice it in the previous blog, but I am also a proud owner of the “hideous lamp”! Sometimes we need a friend to sound the alarm so that we can wake up and purge!!! Note to self: buy new lamp

So funny Lauren – good reminder to me to be careful using the word hideous! I was actually referring more to the trim I added to the shade of that lamp which I really liked for awhile. But then that trim made it start looking like the shade on a certain leg lamp we’re all familiar with . . . and once that image was in my head, it was all over! I was considering a new shade and a coat of spray paint for the lamp until I found the one I ended up with.
